So i just thought i'd put it out there that i am a massive child, and here is a little piece of information that hopefully will make you as excited as it makes me!
And what are the PR consequences of having a "christmas season" that starts on TV ads and in store displays by the middle of November? We all get well and truly sick of the commercialism be the time the actual day arrives. In America (the absolute HOME of overdone Christmas) at least there is Thanksgiving on teh 25th of November to fill up the airwaves and the supermarket aisles. Only after the 25th of Novemebr, does everyone get the santas out of the cupboard. Wish we had a UK equivalent!
I can completely see where your coming from Catherine, however i love christmas SO much that it doesn't bother me at all when we see the christmas adverts and shop displays in november!! Although i do think it spoils it a little bit, they could at least wait until 1st of december when the countdown really begins with advent calenders etc. I definitely think there should be a UK equivalent to Thanksgiving! Going to america, particularly new york, at christmas time is something i would love to do to experience it all over there!
I love Christmas as well but I'm sick of all those ads and Christmas displays! It's because the meaning of Christmas got lost somewhere between the endless isles and shelves...Christmas is a Christian family holiday and that's why I love it! I'm wondering what would most young people answer if I ask them why we celebrate Christmas. Maybe to go for a drink? Buy presents for you mom, dad, siblings, granny, cousin, best friend, dog, cat, parrot (yeah last year I saw one of my friends buying presents for her cats!). In other words, all I can see is shopping mania and crazy people fighting for a pair of boots on the boxing day....
From a PR point of view this season might be the best time for launching campaigns but I'm so sick and tired of all this. I'm not the most religious person in the world and maybe I'm the last person who should remind people on the meaning of Christmas but it's more than just giving and receiving presents...
Your so right Maria! Even my boyfriend said to me the other day, "Nat, do you even know why we celebrate Christmas!?". He said it as a joke but he was doing it because I get so hyped up about Christmas.... and love going shopping for presents... buying decorations etc.... and i'm not gonna lie it probably does seem like I love the festive season for all the wrong reasons!! I definitely know that the religious reasons behind all of the festive fun is so much more important, but I can't help myself from getting excited!!
Christmas brings family's & friends together or at least it should do!!
I have no problems with cing ads on tele or in the stores in Nov, why should that bother me? it hardly effects how I go about my life or daily routine or anything?
If anything the stores and ads do us a favour (as well as themselves of course ££££$$$$£££££) by starting the promoting in Nov, I prefer to get my shopping done earlier to avoid the mad rush.
Your right Kareem, Christmas does bring family and friends together for that one day of the year (in most cases anyway). Obviously we have to remember those people who don't have family to spend it with, and I completely sympathize with their hate for the season.
Although the season is incredibly commercialised, I still love it all the same! I find it really strange how there is all this excitement leading towards the big day, and as soon as boxing day comes it's like it's all over within the seconds! I can see why people would say that all of the hype leads up to one day and then its over, so why bother getting excited? But I think thats a very negative way of looking at things... CHEER UP!
I also like to get my shopping done as early as possible... although this year I did it at the beginning of November, which meant that I got VERY excited far too early.... and by the time Christmas came, I almost felt like it had already been due to the amount of times I listened to Christmas songs and stared at the presents I had got for my friends and family! So I think that next year I will wait a little bit longer before I set myself on a mission of Christmas!
I think the build up to xmas is all part of the fun of it, if you dont want to get involved then dont, but its there for those that do and I dont see a problem with it. Selling xmas good in the middle off summer however (Harrods) i think is a bit ridiculous!
